Data-only plans: calls, texts, and verification codes

What a data-only eSIM covers, and how to keep receiving calls and bank codes.

Most Vuoly plans are data-only: they include internet access and do not include a phone number, minutes, or SMS. Some plans do include calls and texts; when they do, the plan's details page says so. If calls are not mentioned in the plan details, the plan is data-only.

Either way, a data plan covers almost everything you do while traveling, including maps, browsing, email, and calls and messages over apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime.

Calls and texts on data-only plans

  • Your home number stays on your regular SIM, so you can still receive calls and texts on it while abroad. Your carrier's roaming rates may apply.

  • With WiFi Calling turned on, you can use your home number over the internet instead. See: WiFi Calling for travelers.

Bank verification codes

  • Codes sent by SMS arrive on your home SIM, not on a data-only eSIM. To receive them, keep your home line on with roaming available, or use WiFi Calling.

  • Codes sent through an app or push notification work over your Vuoly data with no extra setup, as do WhatsApp codes.

Tip: before you travel, check which of your accounts still use SMS codes and switch them to app-based confirmation where possible.
